Why do I have to use a password?
Windows Mobile 5.0 FAQ
Congratulations! Your device is running the Messaging Security and Feature Pack (MSFP). That means your device is password-protected, and therefore your data is much more secure. You're also protected because another person can't use your phone or send e-mail from your account. Please be sure to read the IMPORTANT! notes.
You'll need to provide your password whenever your device has been inactive for more than 15 minutes. Activity is defined as:
- touching the keyboard or touchpad
- initiating a phone call
Automatic synchronization is not considered an activity.
You don't need to enter your password for the following tasks:
- call 9-1-1 (use the password entry keypad to dial)
- answer an incoming call
- receive meeting notifications from your Exchange calendar(s)
IMPORTANT!
- Make certain you use a password you can't forget. Unlike most password-protected systems, there is no way to retrieve or reset a forgotten password. You will have to reset your device to the factory settings. You will lose all data and any applications you've installed that are not stored on a memory card. Your Exchange data is safe because it's stored on the Exchange server. You only need to resync your device with the server.
- We highly recommend you only use a 4-digit PIN password and provide yourself a very good hint (but not the password, of course). The operating system makes entering 5 or more digit passwords difficult.
