Why can you remotely reset my device?

Windows Mobile 5.0 FAQ

Remote reset is another security feature of the Windows Mobile 5.0 Security and Feature Pack designed to protect you. Should you lose your device or if it's stolen, an ITS Exchange Service administrator can — at your request — reset the device to its factory settings. This erases all data and any applications you've installed that are not stored on a memory card.

Should you ever need this service, contact your system administrator or the ITS Exchange Service at exchange.support@umich.edu. We will take appropriate steps to confirm your identity before proceeding with the remote reset.

Your Exchange data, of course, is safely stored on the Exchange server. You can still access it using Outlook, Entourage, or Outlook Web Access, and you can resync your device.
