The Macintosh Internet Access Kit (MIAK) for Mac OS X provides everything most people need for connecting to the U-M computing environment, ITCS services, and the Internet.

You can download at no cost the whole kit or individual components of the MIAK from the Blue Disc website.

This document is updated as necessary. If you already have an Internet connection, we recommend you view the latest version.

LEGAL NOTICE: The software installed by this kit is licensed for current University of Michigan students, faculty, and staff as well as U-M Online subscribers. If you leave U-M and do not subscribe to U-M Online, you must remove the installed software from your computer.

NOTE: This document is also available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

    Obtaining the Software

You can download at no cost the whole kit or individual components of the MIAK from the Blue Disc website. Also visit this website for updates and new offerings.

If you prefer to own the CD, you can obtain one for a nominal fee at:

    • U-M Computer Showcase [(734) 647-2537] — located on the ground level of the Michigan Union. For an additional shipping fee, you can have the Blue Disc mailed to you.
    • Media Union Library Reserve Desk on the second floor of the Duderstadt Center on North Campus.
    • BEFORE YOU INSTALL!

      • ADMIN PRIVILEGES? To install the MIAK, your Mac OS X User account must have Admin privileges. If you have only one User account on your computer, you have Admin privileges.
      • DELETE OLDER INTERNET SOFTWARE To avoid potential problems, we recommend you delete older versions of the programs installed by the Kit.
CAUTION! Please read the Mulberry Tips section before deleting an older version of Mulberry.
      • VIRUS PROTECTION The University provides Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X, but you must install it separately. The installer is available on the Blue Disc website and on the 2007-08 Blue Disc CD in the Anti-Virus folder. For more information about viruses and how to protect against them, please visit the U-M Virus Busters website.

Install icons in Dock dialog box

We recommend you select OK. It's easier to remove Dock icons that you may not want than it is to add them later. If you select Don't Add, you'll receive another prompt later.

Most people will want to select the ITCS Login Service.

      8. You'll receive two informational dialog boxes about installing the U M Custom Bookmarks. Click Continue (the only option) to both. Nothing will be installed.

      What's Installed

Fugu icon Fugu 1.2 securely transfers files between computers that support SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol). Use Fugu to access your IFS Home Directory, a secure storage space for your files that is automatically backed up nightly. Fugu uses SSL security — the same used by Internet retailers — to protect your files and your UMICH Kerberos password.
Mulberry icon Mulberry 3.1.6 is an e-mail program that uses the IMAP protocol. With IMAP, your e-mail is stored on a special server rather than on your computer. That means your e-mail is always available to you anywhere in the world regardless of what computer you're using. See Using Mulberry 3 for E-mail (S4312) to help get you started.

NOTE: The MIAK configures Mulberry to access your e-mail from the ITCS E-mail Service. If you don't use the ITCS E-mail Service — or don't know — please read Mulberry Tips.

U-M's web-based mail.umich.edu also uses the IMAP protocol. Refer to Configuring Your E-Mail Program for the ITCS E-Mail Service (S4321) for configuring other commonly used e-mail programs for the ITCS E-mail Service.

Kerberos icon Kerberos protects your UMICH password when you use it within the U-M computing environment. CAUTION! Your UMICH password is critical to your online security. Never use it as a password for services outside of the U-M computing environment; for example, with Gmail or other online offerings. For complete details about your UMICH passwords, please read this.
Terminal icon Three SSH shortcuts for the Mac OS X Terminal program allow you to establish secure ssh connections to special U-M servers, provided that you have permission to access them. They may be available in your Dock if you selected that option.

        ITCS Login Service (login.itd.umich.edu)
        CAEN Login Service (login.engin.umich.edu)
        Statistics and Computation Service (scs.itd.umich.edu)

      Mulberry Tips

Don't Use the ITCS E-Mail Service?
Mulberry comes pre-configured for use with the ITCS e-mail service. Some schools — including Engineering/CAEN (except freshmen) and LS&A — provide their own e-mail services. If you are uncertain about what service you use, please call (734) 764-HELP [764-4357].

If you use an e-mail service other than ITCS, you will need to manually configure Mulberry. Please contact your school's help desk for the correct settings, then follow these instructions.

      Keeping Your Personal Address Book
If you are currently using Mulberry 2.2.1 or earlier and created a personal Address Book:
CAUTION! Do this only if you haven't created a personal Address Book in Mulberry 3 or later.

        1. Open your Documents folder. If there is not a folder called Mulberry, create one.
        2. Open the Mulberry application folder — most likely in your Applications folder or inside the Mac Internet Access Kit folder in your Applications folder.
        3. Move the Address Books folder to the Mulberry folder in your Documents folder.
        4. If prompted, click Replace.
