E-Mail Configuration: Apple's Mail Application

Auto-Configuration Tool for Versions 2.1 and Later

Note: For OS X Lion (10.7), use the manual instructions for Lion.

Download the free U-M Apple Mail Configuration Tool. You'll need to log in with your uniqname and UMICH Kerberos password.

  1. On the Blue Disc website, select Mac OS X as your operating system.

  2. On the Mac OS X page, download the U-M Apple Mail Configuration Tool.

  3. While you're there, check out the other great offerings.

  4. On your Mac, run the installer.

Manual Settings

If you prefer to configure Apple Mail yourself or through the account creation wizard when you first open Apple Mail, you'll need the following information:

Type of account IMAP
Account name ITS IMAP account (or any name of your choice)
E-mail user name your uniqname
Password your UMICH Kerberos password
IMAP Path Prefix This field should be blank. (If it says "mail," delete that text.)

E-mail address for this account

your full e-mail address (for example, bjensen@umich.edu)
Host name for incoming mail server mail.umich.edu
Store Sent Messages on the IMAP server? Yes
Store Drafts on the IMAP server? Yes
Store Deleted Messages on the IMAP server? Yes
Message caching setting for this account Cache everything
Authentication: Use SSL with password
SMTP server (for outgoing mail) smtp.mail.umich.edu
Use SSL for SMTP: Yes
Outgoing server port number: 587

Instructions for OS X Lion (10.7):

  1. From the Dock or Apple Menu, open System Preferences.
  2. Under the heading Internet & Wireless, click Mail, Contacts & Calendars.
  3. Click Add Account.
  4. Click Other.
  5. Select Add a Mail account (the default).
  6. Click Create.
  7. In the Add a Mail Account window, type the following:
    • Full Name: your Full Name as you would like it to appear in E-mail.
    • Email Address: your uniqname@umich.edu (e.g. bjensen@umich.edu)
    • Password: your UMICH Kerberos Password
  8. Click Create.
  9. You will see a dialogue that says Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server "umich.edu". Click Continue.
  10. In the Welcome to Mail window, fill in the blanks again.
  11. In the next Window…
    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Description: ITS IMAP E-mail
    • Incoming Mail Server: mail.umich.edu
    • User Name: your uniqname (e.g. bjensen)
    • Password: your Kerberos password
  12. Click continue.
  13. In the Incoming Mail Security window, select Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and for Authentication type, select Password.
  14. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, type:
    • Description: ITS SMTP
    • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mail.umich.edu
    • Use Authentication: Enabled
    • User Name: your uniqname (e.g. bjensen)
    • Password: your Kerberos password
  15. Click Continue.

    Note: At this point it will take a while to verify the servers, then it will present a summary window. The summary window should look like this:

    Account Description: ITS IMAP E-mail
    Full Name: Your Full Name
    E-mail Address: uniqname@umich.edu
    User Name: uniqname
    Incoming Mail Server: mail.umich.edu
    SSL: On
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mail.umich.edu
    SSL: On

  16. Make sure that Take account online is selected , then click Create.
  17. If the Add Account window appears again, click Cancel.
  18. You should now be in Apple Mail, but there are still a few more steps.
  19. From the Mailbox menu at the top, select Synchronize ITS IMAP E-mail.
  20. On the left, you should have Mailboxes, Reminders, RSS and ITS IMAP E-mail. Click on Inbox and verify that the expected e-mail is there.
  21. Next to ITS IMAP E-mail, click View. You should now see all of the folders in your IMAP folder collection.

Now you're done. You can try sending a test message to yourself to see if you receive it (in a few minutes).
