U-M is going Google! If you use the ITS IMAP email service, you will switch to a U-M Google account sometime during 2012. See the google.umich.edu website for details, including go-live dates. This document will remain available until all IMAP email users have moved to Google Mail.

E-Mail Configuration: Outlook 2007

Outlook 2007 can be used with Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Follow these instructions to configure Outlook 2007 for the ITS IMAP e-mail service.

Download the free Microsoft Outlook Configuration Tool (IMAP). You'll need to log in with your uniqname and UMICH Kerberos password.

USED OUTLOOK 2003 WITH ITS IMAP? If you're on the same computer, your settings from Outlook 2003 should transfer to your new installation of Outlook 2007. Follow these instructions only if you need to.

TIP: Make sure you keep your software up-to-date by using Microsoft Update.


Vista or XP? Although the screen shots in this document are from Vista, the steps are same for XP.


DO NOT USE THE OUTLOOK WIZARD! If you have opened Outlook and receive the Outlook 2007 Startup wizard, click Cancel. Click Yes in the dialog box asking if you are sure you want to exit the wizard. Outlook will quit.

  1. Close Outlook if you have it open.

  2. Click Start and select Control Panel.
    DON'T SEE CONTROL PANEL? You have probably modified your Start menu — right-click the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel.

  3. In the Control Panel window, click User Accounts.
    DON'T SEE USER ACCOUNTS? You are probably viewing Control Panel in Classic mode. If so, click Mail and proceed to step 4's Already Have a Profile?.

  4. In the User Accounts window, click Mail.
    ALREADY HAVE A PROFILE? If you already have an account created in Outlook, you'll receive the following window. Click Show Profiles. Otherwise, proceed to step 5.

  5. In the Mail window, click Add.

  6. in the New Profile window:

    1. in the Profile Name field, enter a descriptive name for this account — for example, ITS IMAP.

    2. click OK.

  7. In the Auto Account Setup window:

    1. in the Your Name field, enter your name as you wish it to appear in the Send field of your messages.

    2. in the E-mail Address field, enter your U-M e-mail address.

    3. Check the checkbox next to Manually configure server settings or additional server types. The entry area of the window will become grayed out.

    4. click Next.

  8. In the Choose E-mail Service window:

    1. click the radio button next to Internet E-mail.

    2. click Next.

  9. In the Internet E-mail Settings window:

    1. next to Account Type, select IMAP from the pull-down menu.

    2. in the Incoming mail server fileld, enter mail.umich.edu.

    3. in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, enter smtp.mail.umich.edu.

    4. in the User Name field, enter your uniqname.

    5. do not enter your password, but uncheck the Remember password checkbox.
      WARNING! Entering your password and leaving the Remember password checkbox active puts your password at risk and allows anyone with access to your computer to read your e-mail and send messages in your name.

    6. click More Settings.

  10. In the Internet E-mail Settings window:

    1. under the General tab.

      1. in the Reply E-mail field, enter your U-M e-mail address.

      2. click the Outgoing Server tab.

    2. under the Outgoing Server tab.

      1. check the checkbox next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.

      2. make certain the radio button next to Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.

      3. click the Advanced tab.

    3. under the Advanced tab.

      NOTE: Please follow the steps in the order shown; you cannot change the Incoming server (IMAP) until you have selected SSL.

      1. in the pull-down menu next to Use the following type of encrypted connection, select SSL.

      2. in the Incoming server (IMAP) field, enter 993.

      3. in the pull-down menu next to Use the following type of encrypted connection, select SSL.

      4. in the Outgoing server (SMTP) field, enter 465.

      5. click OK.

  11. Back in the first Internet E-mail Settings window, click Test Account Settings.

    1. During the test, you'll receive two authentication windows — one for mail.umich.edu and one for smtp.mail.umich.edu.

      In both windows, enter your uniqname and your UMICH Kerberos password — the one you use with Wolverine Access — and click OK.
      WARNING! Never check the Remember Password checkbox. Doing so puts your password at risk and allows anyone with access to your computer to read your e-mail and send messages in your name.

    2. When the test successfully completes, you'll receive a dialog box indicating so. Click Close.
      HINT: If the test is unsuccessful, go through the above steps again and double-check your settings.

  12. Back in the Internet E-mail Settings window, click Next.

  13. In the Congratulations window, click Finish.

  14. Back in the Mail window, click OK.

  15. In Outlook, make sure you are looking at the Inbox for your IMAP account.
