E-Mail Configuration: Thunderbird 2.0 [Mozilla]

  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  2. Click the name of your ITS e-mail account. (If you are creating a new account, click the Add button and provide the same setting information listed below.)

    Type your name and your full e-mail address in the appropriate boxes.

  3. At the top of the list on the left side of the window, select Server Settings.

    In the Server Name field, type mail.umich.edu.

    Under the Security Settings heading, select the SSL radio button.

    From the When I delete a message pop-up menu, select Mark it as deleted.

    Check the Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit checkbox.

  4. At the bottom of the list on the left side of the window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

    Select the default SMTP server, then click Edit. (If there is no default SMTP server to select, click Add to create one.)

  5. In the Server Name field, type smtp.mail.umich.edu.

    In the Port field, type 587.

    Check the Use name and password checkbox.

    In the User Name field, type your uniqname.

    Under Use secure connection, click the TLS radio button.

  6. Click OK.
  7. In the Account Settings window, click OK.

Ongoing Maintenance Tip

We recommend that, from time to time, you do the following to keep your mailbox from taking up unnecessary space on the mail server.

  • From the File menu, select Compact Folders.
