U-M is going Google! If you use the ITS IMAP email service, you will switch to a U-M Google account sometime during 2012. See the google.umich.edu website for details, including go-live dates. This document will remain available until all IMAP email users have moved to Google Mail.

E-Mail Configuration: Thunderbird [Mozilla]

This document provides complete instructions for configuring Mozilla Thunderbird versions 2 and 3 to access the ITS IMAP e-mail service.

Configuration Instructions

Version 3.1

  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.

  2. Click the name of your ITS e-mail account. (If you are creating a new account, click the Add button and provide the same setting information listed below.)

    Type your name and your full e-mail address in the appropriate boxes.

  3. At the top of the list on the left side of the window, select Server Settings.

    In the Server Name field, type mail.umich.edu.

    In the Connection security menu, click SS/TLS.

    In the Authentication method menu, click Normal password.

    Under the When I delete a message section, click Just mark it as deleted.

    Select the Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit check box.

  4. At the bottom of the list on the left side of the window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

    Select the default SMTP server, then click Edit. (If there is no default SMTP server to select, click Add to create one.)

  5. In the Server Name field, type smtp.mail.umich.edu.

    In the Port box, type 587.

    In the Connection Security menu, click STARTTLS.

    In the Authentication Method menu, click Normal password.

    In the User Name box, type your uniqname.

  6. Click OK.

  7. In the Account Settings window, click OK.

Version 2.0

  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.

  2. Click the name of your ITS e-mail account. (If you are creating a new account, click the Add button and provide the same setting information listed below.)

  3. At the top of the list on the left side of the window, select Server Settings.

    In the Server Name field, type mail.umich.edu.

    Under the Security Settings heading, select the SSL radio button.

    From the When I delete a message pop-up menu, select Mark it as deleted.

    Check the Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit checkbox.

  4. At the bottom of the list on the left side of the window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

    Select the default SMTP server, then click Edit. (If there is no default SMTP server to select, click Add to create one.)

  5. In the Server Name field, type smtp.mail.umich.edu.

    In the Port field, type 587.

    Check the Use name and password checkbox.

    In the User Name field, type your uniqname.

    Under Use secure connection, click the TLS radio button.

  6. Click OK.

  7. In the Account Settings window, click OK.
