Responding to a Friend Guest Account Invitation
S4336 May 2009
This document explains how Friend guest account invitations work, how you can respond to such an invitation, and how you can use your Friend account to access U-M protected web resources. It also provides some troubleshooting tips.
If you received a Friend invitation from someone, follow the instructions in this document to respond to the invitation. If you requested your own Friend account and received an e-mail message about the next step in the account-creation process (actually a Friend invitation that you sent to yourself), you can either follow the instructions here for the rest of the process or in How to Set Up a Friend Account for Guest Access to U-M Computing Resources (S4316). Table of ContentsWhat Is a Friend Account Invitation? Many web resources at the University of Michigan require you to first log in with a login ID and a password before you can access the web page or site. Members of the U-M community can use their uniqnames and UMICH passwords to do this.Sometimes, members of the U-M community want guests to have access to their web resources. They can then send invitations to those guests, inviting them to create a Friend guest account that will give them access to those web resources. If you have received an invitation to create a Friend guest account, it is either because you requested access to a particular web resource at U-M or because someone at U-M believes that you need or want such access. A Friend guest account invitation can be customized by the person or U-M unit that sends it, so each invitation may look a bit different. In general, though, Friend invitations are sent via e-mail and include, at a minimum, the following information:
Responding to the InvitationTo respond to the invitation and create your own Friend guest account, begin by clicking the Create Friend Acount link in the text of the invitation. Here are the steps you will go through to create the account:
Using Your New Friend AccountYou can use your Friend guest account to log in to any U-M web resource that you have been authorized to use.Your login ID or name is the full e-mail address that you provided. Your password is the one that you selected. Enter your e-mail address and password at the login screen for the web resource you want to use.
What If I Forget My Friend Password? To Reset Your PasswordIf you forget your Friend account password, you can reset it yourself by visiting this web page:https://friend.weblogin.umich.edu/friend/account/and following the instructions there. To Change Your PasswordYou can change your password at any time by visiting this page:http://friend.weblogin.umich.edu/friend/passwd/First, you will need to log in with your e-mail address and your current password. Then you will be taken to a page where you can change your password.
Troubleshooting TipsIf You Do Not Receive the Account Confirmation MessageAfter you select your Friend password, an e-mail message is sent to the e-mail address you provided. This message confirms creation of your Friend guest account. Most people who report not receiving this message find that it has been caught by their spam filter. If your e-mail program files suspected spam messages in a junk or spam folder, please check that folder to see if the message was put there. The message will be from friend-noreply@umich.edu, and the subject line will be U-M: Your New Friend Account. If Your Invitation has ExpiredThe personalized Create Friend Account link in your invitation expires after 24 hours. If you click the link after it expires and provide a password, you'll see an error message letting you know the invitation has expired. You can request a Friend account for yourself without an invitation by going to the Request a Friend Account page (http://friend.weblogin.umich.edu/friend/).
