Your Exchange 2010 Calendar-Only Account

Your Exchange Calendar-Only account allows you to use your choice of e-mail program but still use your department's Exchange Calendar. This document provides set-up information and caveats for those using Thunderbird, Eudora or the web-based mail.umich.edu e-mail.

NOTE: If you later choose to use Exchange for your e-mail as well, your Calendar-Only account can easily be converted. Just let your system administrator know.

Configuring Your Computer

After your system administrator has set up your account, you must configure Outlook to use only the Calendar feature. If you are not comfortable performing this configuration, please ask your system administrator to help you.

We've made it simple by creating a rule that you can download to your desktop.

Follow the steps below to import the rule into Outlook.

NOTE: If you have not already created your Exchange account in Outlook, please follow the steps in Setting Up Outlook/Exchange on a Windows Computer before proceeding.

  1. In Outlook, from the Tools menu, select Rules and Alerts.

  2. In the Rules and Alerts window, click Options.

  3. In the Options window, click Import Rules.

  4. In the Import Rules from window:

  5. Back in the Options window, click OK.

  6. In the Rules and Alerts window, you'll see the rule you imported. Click OK.

Using Outlook Web App

Using the web-based Outlook Web App (OWA), you can easily view your calendar as well as send and accept meeting proposals.

  1. Point your web browser to the Outlook Web App login page.

  2. Log in to OWA.

    1. Enter umroot\ followed by your uniqname. Make sure you use a backslash.

    2. Enter your Windows Active Directory password.

    3. See the security note below.

    4. Click Log On.

SECURITY NOTE: If you are:

  • Not using your personal computer, leave the Public or shared computer radio button selected. For your security, if you have not sent or received e-mail for 30 minutes, you will be disconnected.

  • Using your own computer, select the Private radio button. You will not be disconnected unless your account has been inactive for 24 hours.

  1. To accept an invitation:

    1. From your Inbox, open the meeting invitation.

    2. Click Accept, and then click Send the response now.

    3. Click Calendar to view your schedule.
  2. When you have finished your session, in the upper-right corner next to your name, click sign out prior to accessing another website or closing your web browser.

IMPORTANT! To protect your privacy, always click sign out when you’re finished using your Exchange account.

Using Calendar-Only with Your E-Mail Program

You'll receive e-mail invitations in your e-mail program, but how you are accept them and enter them into your calendar depends on the program you're using.

If you use a different e-mail program, please ask your system administrator how to use it with Exchange Calendar-Only.



mail.umich.edu

The web-based mail.umich.edu does not connect to your calendar account. You'll see a meeting invitation combined with an opporturnity to accept the invitation.

CAUTION! Accepting the invitation in mail.umich.edu will send your reply to the requester but does not schedule the meeting in your calendar. You must use OWA or Outlook to enter the meeting in your calendar.
