ITS Documentation

U-M is going Google! If you use the ITS Exchange email service, you will switch to a U-M Google account sometime during 2012. See the google.umich.edu website for details, including go-live dates. This document will remain available until all ITS Exchange email users have moved to Google Mail.

Configure IMAP E-Mail Clients for Exchange

S4354 • June 2011

This document provides information to access the ITS Exchange Service using an IMAP e-mail client such as Mulberry or Thunderbird. For maximum benefit from your Exchange account, configure Outlook (Windows and Mac), Apple Mail (Mac), or Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition (Mac) for Exchange. Refer to Additional Resources for information on setting up those three programs for Exchange.

NOTE: Some campus units offer their own services that may require different configuration information.

IMPORTANT! The ITS Exchange Service now routes IMAP and other e-mail clients through Exchange Client Access Servers (CAS). Because of this:

  • the SMTP (outgoing mail) setting exchange.umich.edu does not work, so e-mail clients using this configuration will not be able to send e-mail. If your program's SMTP setting shows exchange.umich.edu, refer to SMTP Configuration Options. If you're not sure how to check this, please refer to E-Mail Settings for Authenticated SMTP.

If the client is configured for anything other than exchange.umich.edu and it works, no change is necessary.

  • although the incoming mail (IMAP) setting — exchange.umich.edu — works, we recommend the preferred IMAP setting — imap-exchange.umich.edu.

  • iPhone users, when prompted for User Name, enter it as umroot\uniqname — note the backslash — for example, umroot\bjensen.

SMTP Configuration Options

There are two SMTP settings that work with the ITS Exchange service:

  • smtp-exchange.umich.edu (recommended)

The following steps are based on Windows (Vista) Outlook.
HINT: If you have trouble finding the SMTP settings for your IMAP e-mail program, refer to E-mail Settings for Authenticated SMTP which covers many popular programs. However, make sure you enter the settings noted below.

    1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.

    2. In the Internet Accounts window, double-click your Exchange account.

    3. In the exchange.umich.edu Properties window:

      1. Click the Advanced tab.

          1. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, make sure the radio button next to "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is active.
          2. Click OK
      3. Back in the exchange.umich.edu Properties window, click OK.

    4. Back in the Internet Accounts window, click Close and save your new settings when prompted.

  • smtp.mail.umich.edu (alternative)
This is the authenticated SMTP address for the ITS IMAP e-mail service. This option requires authenticating twice, once with the Exchange password to access the Exchange account and again with the Kerberos (UMICH) password to send e-mail.

Information on configuring popular e-mail clients using this method is available in the E-mail Settings for Authenticated SMTP document.
HINT: Change the Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) setting to imap-mail.umich.edu at the same time.
