Windows Mobile and the ITS Exchange Service
This document provides information on using your Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices with the ITS Exchange Service. You should already know how to use your device.
Find out which server your Exchange mailbox is on.
USING ANOTHER EXCHANGE SERVICE? Some campus units including the Business School, Business and Finance, and Institute for Social Research (ISR) offer their own services that require different configuration information.

Configuring a Mobile 6 Device for Your Exchange 2007 Server Mailbox
Find out which server your Exchange mailbox is on.
MOBILE 5 DEVICE? Please use Configuring a Mobile 5 or 6 Device for Your Exchange 2003 Server Mailbox.
- From the Start menu, tap Programs.

- In the Programs window, tap ActiveSync.

- In the Enter Email Address window:
- enter your e-mail address.
- tap Next.

- In the User Information window:
- Prior to syncing the first time, Exchange will alert you to required security settings, which you must accept. After clicking OK, Exchange will prompt you to create a password.
WARNING! Make certain you'll be able to remember your PIN. Entering the wrong PIN eight times in a row automatically deletes or wipes all your data. Under certain conditions, it may be possible to retrieve a forgotten password.
- We recommend you:
- select the time of inactivity before which your device will require your password (PIN) again.
- use the password type Simple PIN.
- limit your PIN to four numbers.
- create a password (PIN) hint.
- tap ok.

- ActiveSync will sync your device to your Exchange account.
Configuring a Mobile 5 or 6 Device for Your Exchange 2003 Server Mailbox
Find out which server your Exchange mailbox is on.
- From the Start menu, tap Programs.

- In the Programs window, tap ActiveSync.

- In the ActiveSync window, tap set up your device to sync with it.
- In the Edit Server Settings window:
- enter in lower-case letters exchange.umich.edu.
- check the This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection checkbox.
- tap Next.

- In the 2nd Edit Server Settings window:
- in the User name field, enter your uniqname.
- in the Password field, enter your Exchange/Windows Active Directory password.
- in the Domain field, enter in lower-case letters umroot.
- make sure the checkbox next to Save password is checked.
- tap Next.

- In the 3rd Edit Server Settings window:
- tap the data you want synchronized.
- tap Finish.

- In the Update Required dialog box, click OK.

- ActiveSync will proceed to synchronize your device with your Exchange account.
Searching the Global Address Book (GAL)
- From the Start menu, tap Contacts.

- In the Contacts window:
- tap Menu.
- in the pop-up menu, tap Company Directory.

- In the Company Directory window:
- enter the uniqname or name (last, first).
- tap Search.

- Tap the correct name from the search results.

Security Settings
DEVICE LOCKOUT
If there is no activity on your device for 15 minutes, you must re-enter your password. You can set the device lockout delay for up to 24 hours. Please refer to your device's user guide.
DEVICE WIPE
RESETTING A FORGOTTEN PIN OR PASSWORD
If you have a Mobile 6 device and your Exchange account is on the Exchange 2007 server:
- Using Internet Explorer, log on to OWA.
- Tap Options.
- Tap Mobile Devices.
- Tap your device and click Display Recovery Password.
- Enter the long string of numbers that you'll receive into your device. It will unlock, and you can then reset your PIN or password.
