Signing In and Out of Your M+Google Account Via the Web

This document provides tips for signing in to and out of your M+Google account in ways that protect your privacy and the security of your password. To learn about using Google Apps, visit google.umich.edu.

Which Web Browser?

As you might guess, you'll get the best results when using your M+Google account via the web if you use the Google Chrome web browser. Google supports recent versions of the most popular web browsers. For a list of supported web browsers, go to the Google Support Center and search for "Google Apps supported browsers."

Consider Private Browsing If You Share Your Computer

If you use a public computer or share your computer with other people, you may want to use private web browsing to protect your privacy and reduce the risk of others accidentally logging into your M+Google account. Check the details and instructions for the web browser you use:

Signing In/Logging In

IMPORTANT! Before logging in for the first time, please read about Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and Conflicting Accounts.

Here are three ways to get to your M+Google account and log in:

Via google.umich.edu

  1. Go to google.umich.edu and click one of the buttons at the top left of the page. These buttons take you to Google Apps in the U-M domain.

  2. You'll be directed to the U-M weblogin page to log in. Use your uniqname and UMICH password.

  3. Weblogin passes on its assurance to Google that you are who you say you are and that you are authorized to use Google. Google uses this assurance to sign you in to your M+Google account. Your password is not transmitted to Google. You are now both logged in to weblogin and signed in to Google.

Make M+Google Mail Your Home Page

  1. In your web browser's Preferences, set the home page to be the URL for logging in to M+Google Mail, Calendar, or Docs/Drive.

    • Mail. http://email.umich.edu/

    • Calendar. http://calendar.umich.edu/

    • Docs/Drive. http://docs.umich.edu/

  2. When you open your web browser, you'll be directed to the U-M weblogin page to log in. Use your uniqname and UMICH password.

  3. Weblogin passes on its assurance to Google that you are who you say you are and that you are authorized to use Google. Google uses this assurance to sign you in to your M+Google account. Your password is not transmitted to Google. You are now both logged in to weblogin and signed in to Google.

Through Google's Home Page (google.com)

Signing in this way includes an extra step because you need to first let Google know you want to be connected to the U-M domain.

  1. On the Google home page, click Sign In.

  2. On the Google sign-in page, enter your U-M email address to tell Google to connect you to the U-M domain.

    Do not enter your password here. Wait till you get to weblogin.

    To prevent others who share your computer from accidentally logging in to your account, uncheck the Stay signed in checkbox. To learn what happens if you choose to stay signed in, go to the Google Support Center and search for "stay signed in."

    Click Sign In.

  3. You'll be directed to the U-M weblogin page to log in. Use your uniqname and UMICH password.

  4. Weblogin passes on its assurance to Google that you are who you say you are and that you are authorized to use Google. Google uses this assurance to sign you in to your M+Google account. Your password is not transmitted to Google. You are now both logged in to weblogin and signed in to Google.

Signing Out/Logging Out

When you use your M+Google account via the web, you are logged in to weblogin and signed in to Google. To get completely logged out/signed out, you need to

  • Log out of weblogin and

  • Sign out of Google.

The best way to do this is to Exit or Quit your web browser. This will log you out and sign you out (as long as you unchecked the Google Stay signed in checkbox).

If you wish, you can sign out and log out manually.

To sign out of Google, click your email address in the top right corner of any Google page, then select Sign out.

To log out of weblogin, go to the weblogin page (at weblogin.umich.edu), scroll to the bottom of the page, then click Log Out.
