CAN THE spam!

Don't Automatically Reply to All

You can set your e-mail program so that you have to take a special action in order to "reply to all." Your friends will love you!

mail.umich.edu

When replying to a message, you must first select "reply" or "reply to all." Refer to the Working with Your Messages section of Using mail.umich.edu for E-Mail on the Web (S4297).

Pine

Because of its interface, Pine users can "reply to all" very easily by mistake. Every time you reply to a message with multiple recipients, Pine asks if you wish to "Reply to all recipients?" Please always answer this question carefully, thinking "no" before "yes." If you do mistakenly answer yes, you can cancel that reply and start with a new one.

Mulberry

In its normal configuration, Mulberry does not automatically "reply to all." To reply to more than the sender, you must hold down a key (Option for Macintosh; Alt for Windows) when selecting Reply. If you have customized Mulberry to automatically "reply to all," we highly recommend you change back to the default setting.

  1. Under the File menu, select Preferences.
  2. On the right hand side of the Remote Preferences window, click the radio button next to "Advanced" to make it active.
  3. Select the Message tab.
  4. At the bottom of the Message window, click the radio button next to
    • Macintosh users: Option Key is Down
    • Windows users: Alt Key is Down
  5. Click OK to set your choice. The Remote Preferences window will automatically close.

Eudora

There are many versions of Eudora, and each has a different default setting for "replying to all." We highly recommend you make certain your Eudora program is configured to not automatically "reply to all."

Macintosh

  1. Under the Special menu, select Settings.
  2. In the Settings window, press R to select Replying (if this does not work, scroll through the items and select Replying).
  3. Under the "Reply to all heading," click the radio button next to "When option key is down" to make it active.
  4. Click OK. The Settings window will automatically close.
  5. When you wish to "reply to all," hold down the Option key when you select Reply.

Windows

  1. Under the Tools menu, select Options.
  2. In the Category listing, select Replying.
  3. Click the box next to "Map Ctrl+R to 'Reply to All'" to put a checkmark in it.
  4. Click OK.
  5. When you have a message open and wish to "reply to all," hold down the Ctrl key and press R.
