How to Reset Your Computer's Clock for the Beginning of Daylight Saving Time
(Mac OS X, Versions 10.3.9 and Higher)

Attention Mac OS X 10.3.9 Users! Make sure you have the Daylight Saving Time update for your operating system installed. See Apple's Daylight Saving Time Update (Panther) page for details.

Attention All Mac OS X Users! Make sure your OS is up-to-date. From the Apple menu, select Software Update, and check for new software.

Note: If you already have the correct time zone selected, you don't need to do anything. Your Macintosh will automatically adjust the time for the start of Daylight Saving Time.

Here are instructions for setting the time zone:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, then click Date & Time (in the System row at the bottom).
  2. Click the Time Zone tab.
  3. If you are in the Ann Arbor/Detroit metro area, type "Detroit" in the Closest City box. Confirm that the time zone selected says EST (Eastern Standard Time). If you are elsewhere, type in the name of the closest major city in your time zone.
  4. Click the Date & Time tab.
  5. Check the time and date and correct if necessary.

TIP: If your computer is always connected to the Internet (by DSL, cable modem, or Ethernet), you can choose to have the date and time set automatically on an ongoing basis using a network time server.

    1. Under the Date & Time tab, check the Set date & time automatically checkbox.
    2. Be sure to have the appropriate area of the world selected from the menu to the right of the checkbox—Apple Americas/U.S. (time.apple.com) if you are in the U.S.
  6. Close the Date & Time control panel by clicking the red close button in the upper left-hand corner.
