Systat 13 and SigmaPlot 11 Now Available

Systat, Inc has agreed to provide perpetual licenses for Systat 13 to all faculty and staff of the University of Michigan (all campuses) either for departmental or work-at-home use for no cost through October 31, 2010. This offer includes any new version of Systat released through that date.

ITS Software Licensing and Distribution has modified the Systat order form to indicate the zero cost.

Please note that although the license cost is zero, ITS must continue to track the number of licenses in use. Therefore you are required to indicate a license quantity when ordering Systat. If you require program media you will need to purchase a disc for the normal duplication fee. University of Michigan students may also obtain no-cost Systat licenses by downloading MyStat.

SigmaPlot 11 is also offered via the Systat order page at a volume discount to $83 per license. Note: There has been a delay processing SigmaPlot orders while SWLD works out appropriate purchasing details with the vendor. At this time we still anticipate being able to fill orders for the software at the posted price.

Windows 7

ITS Software Licensing and Distribution is pleased to announce availability of Windows 7 Enterprise.

Licenses for Windows 7 are covered under the University's Campus Agreement. This means that departments do not need to pay license fees for installing Windows 7 on computers owned by the University provided that they were originally purchased with an operating system. Departmental faculty and staff who need installation media may order it from this order form:

The installation media available are full install versions. This means that they can replace any O/S on the computer and are not limited to upgrading any specific O/S.

Any new operating system is likely to present installation challenges and compatibility issues. Departmental users are strongly cautioned to discuss potential problems with professional IT staff prior to attempting a change to a computer's operating system.

License activation for Windows 7 is provided via Microsoft KMS (Key Management Service). Activation is the same as it was for Windows Vista, occurring automatically when the computer is joined to UMROOT, through DNS if your department has set up DNS to automatically activate computers, or manually. See ITS document Microsoft Key Management Service (KMS) for more information.

Users of computers which cannot connect to a KMS server may request other authentication mechanisms by contacting ITS SWLD.

IT Administrators considering deployment of Windows 7 may want to take a look at the U-M Shared Desktop, which will include Windows 7 by early next year. For more information about the Shared Desktop, see http://www.itcs.umich.edu/sharedimage/

ITS is offering assistance with issues related to deploying Windows 7 in the University environment via the 4-HELP phone line, 734-764-4357, Option 2 or email Online.Consulting@umich.edu.

Microsoft's URL for a description of changes and improvements to their desktop operating system is located here.

Questions or comments regarding Windows 7 licensing may be directed to ITS SWLD

Windows Server 2008 R2

ITS Software Licensing and Distribution is pleased to announce availability of licenses, software assurance (SA) and program discs for Windows Server 2008 R2. The R2 designation applies to the Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter versions of Windows Server 2008. Microsoft considers R2 to be a new release of this software which means that licensees of the original version of Windows Server 2008 or earlier versions of Windows Server need to pay a new license fee to upgrade unless they have purchased SA for the current contract period (December 1, 2007 through November 30, 2010).

Departments which have previously purchased their Windows Server licenses with SA may upgrade to R2 without additional license fees. You will need to supply the request (receipt) number of your SA purchase to order your program discs without an accompanying license purchase.

Windows Server 2008 R2 is available in 64 bit versions only.* Departments who desire to run Windows Server on 32 bit machines may continue to do so by purchasing a license for Windows Server 2008 and ordering the media for R1 or any prior release of the same Server edition (Standard, Enterprise or DataCenter).

The order form for Windows Server 2008 R2 is located here.

A summary of new features in the R2 Windows Server 2008 release may be found here.

Windows Server 2008 is authenticated via the Microsoft Key Management Server system (KMS). See ITS document Microsoft Key Management Service (KMS) for more information.

Apple Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

ITS SWLD has received media for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

If you have not ordered your disks yet, and you are a current SWLD maintenance customer and wish to receive a Snow Leopard disk, please complete the order form located here.

On the order form, you will need to provide proof of maintenance purchase through our department.

At this time, ITS SWLD cannot sell individual Snow Leopard licenses. Apple is in the process of developing new licensing programs for the education market and we will keep the University community informed as this develops. In the meantime, if you have a pressing need for Snow Leopard and do not wish to purchase a maintenance agreement, you can purchase licenses directly from the U-M Computer Showcase or Apple.com.
